She was born Dixie Jewell Ross on August 9, 1929 in Texas, Her father, Charles Ross, was a dirt farmer. Dixie and her two older sisters, Veda and Betsy Ann, were taught to sing and dance by their mother. The trio began performing professionally as The Ross Sisters in 1939. They appeared in cabarets and fairs all over the country. Their acrobatic dancing and amazing contortionist skills made them a popular act. In 1942 they were featured in the hit Broadway show Count Me In. Then they got the chance to perform an acrobatic number in the 1944 MGM musical Broadway Rhythm. Unfortunately this would be their only film appearance. The Ross Sisters went to London in 1946 to star in the stage revue Piccadilly Hayride. It was a hit and ran for than 800 performances. They also danced for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at a Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium.

On Jul 10, 1948 eighteen year old Dixie married British entertainer Dickie Henderson. She spent the next few years performing with her husband. The couple lived in London and had two children - Matthew and Linda. Dixie decided to quit show business and became a full-time housewife. During the early 1960s she opened a dress shop in Park Lane. Her marriage to Dickie was tumultuous and they agreed to have a trial separation in 1963. Tragically on July 10, 1963, her fifteenth wedding anniversary, she committed suicide by swallowing fifteen sleeping pills. She was only thirty-three years old. Dixie was buried at Gunnersbury Cemetery in Acton, England. Her husband always claimed that she had accidentally overdosed.
